We identified 55 reports in the Yellow Card database that are probable reports of topical steroid withdrawal reactions and 62 further reported reactions potentially indicative of topical steroid withdrawal reactions. We also considered information to prescribers or patients on topical steroid withdrawal reactions from other regulators. Of 142 social media blogs on topical steroid withdrawal reactions, 26 were blogs discussing children, the majority of these (18) were from the USA, with 4 being from the UK.

(The appearance can vary between individuals and also appear on different areas of the body on the same person). As the patches heal they tend to leave scars and in individuals with darker complexions the pigment can be lost, leaving white areas. When taken for long periods (more than 2-3 months), or in large doses, corticosteroids can cause a range of possible side effects; the higher the dose, the greater the chances of side effects.

Different types of steroid creams and their strengths

There’s no clear evidence that hydrocortisone skin treatments affect male or female fertility. To reduce the risk of side effects your doctor may recommend that you only use hydrocortisone for a few weeks at a time. Skin gets inflamed when an allergic reaction or irritation causes chemicals to be released in the skin.

Red skin syndrome is a term used by patients for side effects seen after stopping topical corticosteroids that were used for prolonged periods of time. These reactions are also referred to as steroid addiction, topical steroid withdrawal, red burning skin, and steroid dermatitis. In this report, we use the term topical steroid withdrawal reactions. Topical steroid withdrawal reactions are thought to result from prolonged, frequent, and inappropriate use of moderate to high-potency topical corticosteroids.

How do I know if I have TSW?

They work to suppress inflammation which they do by reducing the chemicals in the body that lead to inflammation. ‘In severe cases there can be hair loss, excessive sweating, shivering and in turn a hugely negative impact on your sleep and mental health. If you are concerned you may have TSW make sure you speak to your doctor,’ explains Dr Vyas. ‘Following application instructions are key – using too little can result in long-term use and a prolonged flare because the inflammation is never properly controlled,’ says Dr Vyas.

The MHRA use specialised software to subject Yellow Card data to statistical analysis to detect signals. Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes red, flaky, crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scales. Eczema is the name for a group of conditions that cause skin to become dry and irritated. But tell the doctor or nurse that you’re using hydrocortisone cream so they can give the vaccine in an untreated area of skin. Do not apply hydrocortisone at the same time as other creams or ointments such as a moisturiser. Wait at least 10 minutes between using hydrocortisone and any other product.

As a result, the numbers of cases for each steroid medicine in Table 1 are not directly comparable, and a higher number of reports should not be interpreted as a larger risk being present for individual steroid medicines. Topical treatment
Locally applied corticosteroids can be very anabolic steroids where to buy effective if the area of affected skin is not too large. These preparations vary in their strength from mild to very strong. Strong steroid preparations are often needed to begin with, but these should always be used under medical supervision because of the risk of skin damage.

If you have epilepsy this could become worse when taking steroids. You might have a burning or tingling sensation around your bottom during a steroid injection into a vein (intravenous). Your nurse will give the injection slowly to try and prevent this.

Moderate steroid creams

When using hydrocortisone on your skin, follow the instructions from your pharmacist, doctor or the leaflet that comes with your treatment. Sometimes hydrocortisone is mixed with antimicrobials (chemicals that kill germs). This is used to treat skin problems caused by bacterial or fungal infections. Pharmacies sell hydrocortisone skin cream up to a maximum 1% strength.

The author therefore examined the demographics and outcomes in adult patients who believe they are experiencing topical steroid withdrawal reactions following discontinuation of chronic overuse of topical corticosteroids. This paper by Sheary reviews some individual cases and the literature, including the review by Hajar above. The author concludes that the issue is under recognised and that most cases are caused by prolonged or inappropriate use of topical corticosteroids. The table below is reported as the common features of topical steroid withdrawal reactions.
